7. IAV-Podcasts_2021: Taking Ownership -- A Bit of Food for Thought on Capitalism

Episode #7

Description: Capitalism embraces ownership, as does ownership embrace responsibility. The idea is to allow business to profit from the preservation of nature and growing their businesses while improving the health of the planet and its environment. There is a reference to Prof. Jonathan Haidt and his book, “Three Stories about Capitalism: The moral psychology of economic life” and a reference to a quote from Fund Manager, Edouard Carmignac, founder of fund company Carmignac Gestion who refers to ETFs as "socialist accounting".

The Times They Are a-Changin': In recent decades, it's not just the balance of power on the global capital market that has changed, says Edouard Carmignac, founder of the fund company of the same name, to the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (FAZ). In addition, all kinds of new investment instruments have emerged, such as passive index funds. The Carmignac boss is not particularly enthusiastic about these. "Personally, I call it socialist accounting: everyone earns the same," the daily newspaper quotes him as saying. "But I don't think it does much for the economy itself." The reason, he believes, is that ETF investors would invest primarily in mature and expensive companies.
